Oil, battery, filters and valves
Generac's current support guidance recommends 5W-20 full synthetic oil for home standby generators after the break-in period. Generators ship with conventional oil; do not switch to synthetic before break-in unless the exact manual says otherwise.
Filter part number and oil capacity vary by model. Current Next Generation examples list about 1.4 qt for 10 kW, 2.5 qt for 14/18 kW, and 2.2 qt for 22–28 kW including the filter.
Battery inspection is part of scheduled maintenance, but battery group/type and minimum CCA are model-sensitive. Use the exact model requirement before replacement.
Next Generation air-cooled units and 14/18 kW Guardian models with hydraulic lifters do not require valve-clearance inspection/adjustment. Other applicable Guardian models do.
Generac's current schedule shortens oil/oil-filter service to every year or 100 run hours in environments below 40°F or above 85°F.
During a multi-day outage
Generac’s July 2026 continuous-use guidance applies to current Guardian and Next Generation air-cooled units approaching or exceeding 24 hours of continuous operation. It calls for a safe shutdown for at least 30 minutes, an oil-level check, leak inspection and louver/debris inspection. If the generator reaches a scheduled run-hour service interval during the outage, that service still becomes due.
Valve-adjustment exception
Generac states that Next Generation air-cooled generators and 14/18 kW Guardian models equipped with hydraulic lifters do not require valve-clearance inspection or adjustment.
For Guardian models without hydraulic lifters, Generac’s current support procedure identifies valve-clearance inspection after the first 25 hours and then at 400-hour intervals. Always verify the exact engine/model before using that interval.
