A permanent standby generator is not just an appliance drop-off. It is a coordinated electrical, fuel, site, permitting and commissioning project. This guide shows homeowners what should happen, what drives the quote and what deserves a question.

What does a proper installation include?

At minimum: correct generator sizing, code-compliant placement, an approved base, correctly sized fuel supply, an automatic transfer switch, electrical/control wiring, permits and inspections where required, startup testing and a simulated utility outage. The cheapest quote is not necessarily the same system.

Load assessment and sizing

Start with what you actually want backed up: essential circuits, central air, well pump, electric heat, medical equipment, or the whole home. Motor starting loads and load-management controls can change the generator size you need.

Site and clearance review

The installer evaluates the electric service, gas or propane source, windows, doors, air intakes, lot lines, service access, exhaust direction, snow exposure and the route for conduit and fuel piping.

Permits and utility coordination

Electrical, fuel-gas, building or zoning permits may apply. Requirements vary by jurisdiction, and natural-gas service may need a meter or regulator review before installation.

Pad and generator placement

The generator is set on an approved composite or concrete base and secured when required. Manufacturer-specific clearance rules and local code both matter; do not assume one brand's placement allowance applies to another.

Fuel connection

Natural-gas or LP piping is sized for generator demand, length, pressure and other connected appliances. The finished system is leak-tested and fuel pressure must remain within the generator's specification under load.

Electrical and transfer switch

A qualified installer connects the generator to an automatic transfer switch (ATS), grounding/bonding and control wiring. The ATS isolates utility power before generator power is supplied to the home.

Startup and commissioning

The installer verifies settings, fuel pressure, voltage, frequency, battery charging, controller operation and transfer behavior, then simulates an outage and confirms the selected loads operate correctly.

Handoff and maintenance setup

Before the job closes, get the model/serial numbers, manuals, warranty registration, exercise schedule, maintenance requirements, installer contacts and a clear explanation of what to do during a long outage.

Where installation problems and surprise costs usually begin.

Placement & clearance

Clearance is model- and listing-specific. Some listed residential units are approved for reduced separation from a building under defined conditions, while openings, exhaust, service access and local rules can require more. Use the exact installation manual and local approval—not a universal internet number.

Fuel capacity

A generator can be correctly wired and still fail under load if the gas system cannot maintain required pressure. Pipe diameter, equivalent length, meter/regulator capacity, propane vaporization and simultaneous appliance demand all matter.

ATS & load management

The transfer switch must match the electrical design. Load management can let a smaller generator serve a home by temporarily delaying selected large loads rather than sizing for every appliance starting at once.

Common homeowner questions

Can I install a standby generator myself?

Manufacturers emphasize professional/code-compliant installation because the project involves permanent fuel and electrical connections, transfer equipment, site rules and commissioning. Even where an owner is legally allowed to perform some work, permit, licensing, inspection, warranty and utility requirements can still apply.

How close can a standby generator be to my house?

There is no safe universal answer. Clearance depends on the exact generator listing/manual, wall construction, openings, exhaust direction and the authority having jurisdiction. Certain residential models advertise tested 18-inch building clearance under specified conditions; that does not erase other clearance requirements.

Will I need a larger natural-gas meter?

Possibly. The generator adds a large fuel load. A qualified installer or utility should evaluate meter/regulator capacity, delivery pressure, pipe length and other gas appliances. This is an important pre-quote question because upgrades can materially affect installed cost.

Do I need a 200-amp transfer switch?

Not automatically. Transfer-switch selection depends on your service and system design. Manufacturer offerings commonly include 100-, 150-, 200-amp and larger configurations. The ATS rating and whether it is service-entrance rated should be explicit in the quote.

What should happen before I make final payment?

The system should be commissioned and tested, including a simulated outage/transfer. You should receive model and serial information, operating guidance, warranty/registration details, maintenance requirements and confirmation of permits/inspection where applicable.
