Generac error code · 2800 / 2801

Generac code 2800 usually means an auxiliary shutdown switch is open.

This is one of the more homeowner-checkable Generac alarms. The controller is being told that an emergency or auxiliary shutdown switch is in the shutdown position, so the generator is prevented from running.

Direct answer

2800 is an auxiliary shutdown alarm—not a generic engine failure.

Generac says code 2800 is triggered when the Emergency Stop or auxiliary shutdown circuit is open. On Guardian-series units, a switch can be bumped accidentally, left open after maintenance, or intentionally tripped by a service provider. The generator will not run until the shutdown circuit is restored and the alarm is cleared.

What to check

Follow the shutdown-switch path before assuming something larger failed.

01

Check the external shutdown switch

On most air-cooled Guardian models made after 2017, Generac places an auxiliary shutdown switch on the back of the generator. The I / closed side must be pressed for the generator to run.

02

Check for a second switch

Two-cylinder Guardian models can have a second auxiliary shutdown switch inside the enclosure near the control panel/firewall area. Both switches must be closed before the alarm can clear.

03

Clear the alarm only after the switch is reset

For Evolution-style Guardian controls, Generac instructs owners to press OFF, then ENTER, then AUTO after the shutdown switch or switches are back in the closed position.

04

Treat a returning code as a service clue

If 2800 returns without anyone operating the switch, Generac says a wiring or connection issue may be involved. That is a reason to stop resetting the code and have the system diagnosed.

Guardian-series reset

The switches must be closed before the controller reset matters.

Generac's current Guardian guidance is to locate the external shutdown switch and place it in the I / closed position. If the model has a second internal switch, that switch also has to be closed. After the switch condition is corrected, the Evolution-style controller can be cleared with OFF, then ENTER, followed by AUTO.

2800 vs 2801

A secondary shutdown can report 2801 on newer installations.

Generac notes that newer air-cooled units may have one main shutdown switch, while local code can require a secondary emergency shutoff near the transfer switch. That secondary circuit can report code 2801. The exact switch arrangement is model- and installation-dependent, so use the owner or installation manual for the specific unit.

Why it can happen suddenly

The switch can be tripped without an internal generator failure.

Generac specifically notes accidental contact, maintenance activity and even animals as possible reasons a Guardian shutdown switch gets moved. A service provider may also intentionally leave the switch open when a generator is awaiting repair. If the unit was recently serviced, confirm that before repeatedly resetting it.

During an outage

If the generator had been carrying the house, use the outage restart procedure.

Generac warns against simply restarting a standby generator under the full connected household load after an alarm. If code 2800 occurred while the generator was supplying the home, follow the manufacturer outage-restart sequence before restoring loads.
