Generac won’t go into AUTO mode? Start with the controller state.
If the generator is stuck in OFF or refuses to return to READY TO RUN, the issue may be an active alarm, activation status, SERVICE mode, or a shutdown condition—not simply a bad AUTO button.
Direct answer
AUTO mode depends on the generator being in a valid ready state.
Generac’s current support guidance says AUTO mode tells the generator to respond to an outage and transfer back when utility power returns. If the unit will not enter AUTO, first check for alarms, activation status, SERVICE mode and shutdown conditions before assuming a hardware failure.

Is the generator activated?
Generac notes that activation is required for AUTO-mode operation on supported home standby systems.

Is it in SERVICE mode?
On some controllers, SERVICE mode prevents normal AUTO operation. Controller status and indicator lights can point to this condition.

Are shutdown switches reset?
Some generators have auxiliary shutdown switches. Code 2800 and related shutdown conditions need to be addressed before the unit can return to ready status.

The button sequence changes by controller.
Generac currently documents different AUTO procedures for Power Zone 200, Evolution/Sync, Nexus, PowerPact and Power Zone 410 controllers. That is why generic “press AUTO” advice can be incomplete if the unit is in an alarm or shutdown state.
If the power is already out
Switching a generator into AUTO during an outage can cause it to start immediately. Use the correct outage procedure and make sure the generator is not being restarted under household load.
If the generator runs but the house stays dark
That becomes a transfer/power-delivery problem, not simply an AUTO-mode problem. Do not open energized transfer-switch equipment to troubleshoot it yourself.
